Okay,

Here is a start.  I have decided to begin with contradictions.  This is likely to span several emails.

None of these are likely to be original, and I am not sure to what extent any are already known to you or anyone you choose to share them with.  You might be tempted to dismiss some as trivial, misinterpretation, or mistranslation.  But before you use this as a defense please remember that the Bible is supposed to be the divine, perfect word of an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being.  Being a perfect book it should remain perfect through transcriptions and translations.

Contradictions: These are instances of diametrically opposed passages.  Both cannot be true.  For one to be true the other must be false thus showing that the Bible contains untruths (thus disproving infallibility).  Of course neither version may be true.

I guess the start is a good place to begin. So off we go to Genesis.  I'm only going to start with ten contradictions.  Trust me, there are plenty more.

1. The two contradictory creation accounts. 1:1-2:3, 2:4-25
Gen.1:25-27
(Humans were created after the other animals.)
And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let us make man in our image.... So God created man in his own image.

Gen.2:18-19
(Humans were created before the other animals.)
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

Gen.1:27
(The first man and woman were created simultaneously.)

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Gen.2:18-22
(The man was created first, then the animals, then the woman from the man's rib.)

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them.... And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

2. How long did creation take? 1:3-2:3, 2:4
One day or Six?

One day.

Gen.2:4
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

Six days.
Gen.1:3 - 2:3
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. ... And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
    ...
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3. Were plants created before or after humans? 1:11, 2:4-7

Plants were created before humans.
Gen.1:11-13, 27-31
And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so .... And the evening and the morning were the third day.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them .... And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Plants were created after humans.
Gen.2:4-7
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth ... And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground.

4. When were the stars made? 1:16-19

On the fourth day of creation, after the earth was made.
Gen.1:16-19
He made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven.... And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Before the earth was made.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? ... When the morning stars sang together.

Here endeth the first ten.  Let me know what you think.  Were you aware that such things existed?

I can keep these coming for weeks if you like, but you might prefer to request something more specific.  perhaps a particular book or two?

Please feel free to check the passages for yourself, as a believer I would be disappointed if you did not.  Also confer with whoever you like.  Others are also welcome to join the thread if you feel you are swamped.

I'll try to send another email tomorrow.

I hope you give this serious consideration, remember this is the book upon which you are basing you
life and decisions.

Cheers,

Mike
