[Family member A],
Thanks for jumping in on the discussion, I am happy that you are
reading these e-mails and please feel free to contribute.
You accuse me of a cynical view of Christianity similar to one used to
possess. I don't know how similar they are, but I suspect that
there are some significant differences. As to the Christian
cynicism in charge, it is insufficient. Christianity is just one
theism among many. Cynicism toward theisms in the sense of world
wariness I would plead guilty to. However the majority of the
time I think I hold a positive outlook on the world.
I certainly hope the extent of your cynicism was not the sycophantic
rantings of Christian music, personally I see Christian music as little
different to any other music. Its rhythm and melody can be very
catching and pleasant to the ear, but if there is a message within its
lyrics is usually simplistic, puerile and without substance. If
he would like me to pass the lyrics you have posted and comment on them
I would be happy to do so but I don't seriously think you are holding
this up as a basis for your belief system.
I will, however, point out one thing. The song states quite
clearly that the stars and the heavens are created by the Creator's
fingers,in a few lines later it is the creator has given dominion over
the works of his hands to the human species. Even a modicum of
critical thought can view reality and see that we barely have dominion
over the planet Earth let alone any extra terrestrial object in the
universe. Sycophantic rantings.
What I am interested in, are the reasons that genuine theists believe
in their particular theism. Surprisingly it is difficult to discuss
this in a calm and rational manner with the most theists of my
acquaintance. Thankfully [Family member B] has discussed this
calmly, and in the most part rationally. It is you, my family,
from whom I am currently looking to get a firsthand
understanding. I know you term yourselves Christian. Would
you concede that Christianity is a theism? I will address
Christianity in isolation if I must, but would prefer to include other
theistic believes and at least initially address the commonalities
between them.
